Any vehicle propelled by an electric or gas engine with no less than three wheels in contact with the ground that is designed and manufactured for operation on a golf course for sporting or recreational purposes and that is not capable of exceeding speeds of 20 miles per hour. Motor vehicles classified as all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) or off-road vehicles are excluded from the definition of golf carts.

Do I need a driver’s license to operate these vehicles on a public street?

If you’re operating one on a public street where permitted, you must have a valid driver’s license issued by a state authorizing you to operate a motor vehicle.

What is the speed limit while driving on a public street?

These vehicles may not be operated on a street or golf cart lane at speeds greater than 20 miles per hour.

Can I drive a golf cart on someone else’s property?

You must have the property owner’s permission before operating a golf cart on private property.

Does everyone riding in the vehicle need a seat?

Passengers should only ride in designated seating areas and the vehicle should never carry more people than it was designed to transport.
